I watched many episodes of the TV show “Cops” in my life as well as many buddy cop movies; such as but not limited to, the Bad Boys Trilogy. These idols stood for something greater than they are; upholding the law, protecting civil liberties, and helping people at the end of the day. That inspired something in me, so I decided to want to be a cop when I grow up. Here I am now, freshman year of college majoring in criminal justice and hoping to get a job in government outside or in our nation’s capital. But this life plan did not just come to fruition without a whole baggage load of doubt, and sometimes even now. This doubt has been brought to mind often as of late since there has been a bounty of hate directed at cops, words toss around such as police brutality, and movements associated with it, such as Black Lives Matter. These groups wish to taint the reputation of all officers of the law across the country, now maybe even the globe, just because of a few bad apples in the orchard. I can recall all those times policeman would come to my elementary or middle school talking about what they do, if these movements and people can just see or feel what I did my whole life, I am sure there would not be as much hate present as there exists today. Today aside from all the BuzzFeed facts on police brutaility and what horrible monsters the police are, a black male is in fact 60x more likely to die at the hands of another black male. This killer could be the result of gang violence, the result of aggravation, or who knows what. The facts say that of all the killings taking place in the whole country, only 400 on average fall at the hands of a cop. For all we know, or the news knows, many of the killings could have been provoked on account of the victim. Often times these days many officers are on edge and any behavior outside of doing exactly as they instruct could be counted for suspicious action.
